There’s a kind of tiredness that sleep cannot fix.
Every mother who has rocked her baby at 2 a.m. knows what I’m talking about.
You close your eyes, hoping for rest, but your mind stays awake—listening for every whimper, every shuffle, every sigh. The house is quiet, yet your heart keeps working, your body still on duty.

In those long nights, when everyone else is asleep, it can feel like you are the only one awake in the world. You whisper a prayer, “Lord, please, just one hour of rest,” but the baby stirs again, and your day continues.
The Hidden Weight of Tiredness
Nobody really warns you about this part of motherhood.
Yes, they tell you that you will lose sleep, but they don’t tell you how it feels to live on two hours of it—how your eyes ache, how your patience thins, how you start to forget who you were before you became “Mummy.”
You love your baby deeply, but you also miss yourself.
And that is not selfish. It is simply human.
Motherhood demands everything. It stretches your body, your time, your emotions. But it also calls you to learn new strength—strength you never knew you had.
Learning to Rest Differently
Sometimes rest doesn’t look like a full night’s sleep.
Sometimes it’s a ten-minute nap while the baby sleeps on your chest.
Sometimes it’s stepping outside for fresh air, even if it’s just to stand under the morning sun and breathe.
Rest is not only in sleeping; it’s also in pausing, in letting your body and heart take a small break. You don’t have to do everything perfectly today. The dishes can wait. The laundry can wait. What matters most right now is you.
Dear Mama, You Are Doing Enough
If you’ve been running on empty, please hear this—
You are not failing. You are healing.
Your body just created and brought life into this world. It is allowed to be tired. It is allowed to need help.
Let someone else hold the baby for a while. Let your mother, your sister, your friend, or even your husband rock the cradle.
Close your eyes, even if it’s just for a few minutes. The world will still be here when you wake up.
A Prayer for the Weary Mother
Dear Lord,
For the mother who hasn’t slept well in weeks, please give her peace.
For the one whose eyes are heavy and heart feels weak, please give her strength.
Teach her that rest is not a luxury—it is a need You designed for her too.
And when she feels alone in the dark, remind her that You are awake with her.
Amen.
Motherhood is holy work. And even holy work deserves rest.
So tonight, if sleep feels like a stranger, may you find comfort in knowing that you are seen, loved, and doing far better than you think.
