Introducing Solid food: Is Your Baby Ready?

Spread the love

You’re eating jollof rice, and suddenly… tiny hands grab your spoon. Your 5-month-old stares with laser focus. “Is it time?!”
Hold that thought. Starting solids too early risks tummy troubles. Too late? Missed nutrition. Let’s decode your baby’s true readiness signs—and what to safely offer first.

5 Signs Your Baby Is TRULY Ready (Not Just Curious!)

  1. Sits Up (Mostly) Solo:

    • No slumping in the high chair. Head steady = safe swallowing.

  2. Lost the “Tongue Thrust”:

    • Stops pushing purees out with their tongue (around 6 months).

  3. Chewing Motions:

    • Munching air while watching you eat? Brain’s prepping!

  4. Grabby Hands:

    • Reaches for your fried plantain or spoon like it’s gold.

  5. Big Appetite:

    • Still hungry after 8–10 breastfeeds/formula feeds? Time for +1.

“My son grabbed a puff of eba off my plate at 5 months! Pediatrician said: ‘Wait till he sits.’ Two weeks later—game on.” — Amara, Lagos

🥄 First Foods: Simple Starts (Nigerian Kitchen Edition)

Start with IRON-RICH foods (breastmilk lacks enough after 6 months):

  • Fortified Pap (Ogi/Akamu): Mix with breastmilk/formula. Thin → thick over weeks.

  • Mashed Beans (Stewed): Moin moin without pepper/salt. Blend smooth.

  • Pureed Pumpkin (Ugu): Boil till soft, mash with a fork.

  • Peeled/Sliced Ripe Plantain: Steam, then mash or serve as soft sticks.

  • Avocado Fingers: Ripe slices they can gum (slippery? Roll in pap powder).

Pro Tip: Offer 1–2 tsp after milk feeds. Twice a day max at first.

🚫 What NOT to Offer Yet

  • Honey: Risk of botulism (wait till age 1).

  • Cow’s Milk: As drink (okay in pap).

  • Choking Hazards:

    • Whole nuts

    • Hard chunks (raw carrot, apple)

    • Sticky peanut butter (thin with water)

  • Salt/Sugar: Tiny kidneys can’t handle it.

🔍 Baby-Led Weaning (BLW) vs. Purees: Which Wins?

Purees Baby-Led Weaning (BLW)
Pros: Less mess, easier iron intake Pros: Builds motor skills, self-feeding joy
Cons: Spoon battles later? Cons: Gagging scares (normal!), slower iron intake
Try: Blend boiled sweet potato + fish (boneless!) Try: Soft-boiled yam sticks, flaked mackerel

Hybrid Hack: Offer mashed beans and plantain sticks. Let baby choose!

😬 Gagging vs. Choking: Know the Difference

  • Gagging:

    • Loud coughing, red face.

    • Don’t panic! It’s how babies learn. Let them work it out.

  • Choking:

    • Silent struggle, blue lips.

    • ACT FAST: Back blows (call for help!).

Practice infant CPR before starting solids. (Red Cross Nigeria offers classes!)

🌾 Introducing Allergens: Go Slow & Smart

Top allergens: eggs, peanuts, fish, wheat.
Safe method:

  1. Rub a tiny bit on baby’s lip. Wait 10 mins.

  2. No rash? Offer ¼ tsp mashed.

  3. Wait 3 days before new food.

“I gave tiny groundnut paste mixed with pap. No reaction! Now he loves it.” — Tunde, Ibadan

💡 Your No-Stress First Foods Plan

  1. Wait for 3+ readiness signs (usually 6 months).

  2. Start with iron-rich pap/beans/pumpkin.

  3. Try 1 new food every 3 days.

  4. Let mess happen! Learning > neatness.

  5. Trust your gut: If baby hates it? Try again next week.

When solids backfire (constipation, rash):
→ Pause new foods.
→ Boost fluids (breastmilk, water sips).
→ Call your pediatrician.
